Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says key Labor factional leader JOE DE BRUYN'S call for
the ALP to allow a conscience vote on IVF shows support for his government's stance.

Mr HOWARD says the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association national secretary
is a very respected member of the Labor party.

Mr DE BRUYN has urged Labor leader KIM BEAZLEY to reconsider his opposition to the
government's plan to allow states to block women without a male partner from IVF treatment.

He has called for Labor MPs to be allowed a conscience vote when caucus meets to discuss
the issue next week.

Legislation is expected to be introduced soon after federal parliament resumes next
week following a court decision that a Victorian ban was in breach of the Sex Discrimination
Act.
