NSW: Fires may hasten need for mandatory water restrictions
Mr Yeadon stressed voluntary water restrictions put in place two weeks ago did notapply to people protecting their homes from the threat of bushfires.
"Can I make it absolutely clear to everyone that when we are fighting fires ... thereare no water restrictions in relation to dealing with the threat of bushfire," he said.
The state government has warned compulsory restrictions, as a result of the drought, could be imposed by Christmas.
"... if things continue the way they are at present then it is inevitable that we willbe looking at compulsory restrictions prior to Christmas, and that's only two and a halfweeks away," Mr Yeadon said.
"There is no doubt that we need to use significant levels of water to fight these firesand that will be having an impact on our supplies.
"The government will not hesitate to introduce compulsory restrictions if and whenwe deem that to be necessary."
